Lost - Stray Dogs

Currently the Animal Shelter is close to full capacity in our dog kennel section. Please call us at 463-4427 if you find a lost - stray dog that doesn't have identification like a " dog license tag, rabies tag or name tag" we will ask if it is possible for you to hold the lost - stray dog for a couple of days until we are able to free up space in our dog kennels.  Staff will ask you if you can bring the lost - stray dog to the Animal Shelter at 298 Plant Road, Ukiah, CA so we can scan the lost - stray dog for a microchip, take their picture and post the lost - stray dog information on our Facebook page in an effort to reconnect the lost - stray dog with their owner.

If you are willing to hold the lost - stray dog but not able to come to the Animal Shelter we will attempt to make arrangements for an Animal Protection Officer to come to your location, scan the lost - stray dog for a microchip, take the dogs picture and post the lost - stray dog information our Facebook page in an effort to reconnect the lost - stray dog with their owner.

If you are not able to do the above then we will ask that you not take custody of the lost - stray dog and send us a picture & general location of the lost - stray dog for us to post on our Facebook page in an effort to reconnect the lost - stray dog with their owner.  Please send your pictures of the lost - stray dogs to the following email link - Lost - Stray Animal Pictures.

If you find a lost - stray dog that has identification like a "dog license tag, rabies tag or name tag" please contact us at 463-4427. Staff will attempt to run the tags in our database to locate & contact an owner.  If we are not able to locate or contact the owner you have the option of holding onto the dog for several days as stated above or we will make arrangements to impound the owned dog as soon as possible.

These are very difficult times for animal owners, lost - stray animals & Animal Shelters.  Animal Care Services appreciates any assistance that we can get from citizens in these situations.

Thank you.

High Occupancy in Dog Kennels - Not Accepting Dogs - 100% full in Dog Kennels
Update - the Animal Shelter as of today 4-26-2024 is full with dogs.

We are now making the public aware that euthanasia for space is a strong possibility due to the high occupancy in the dog kennels.  Going forward if needed, the dogs facing euthanasia will be posted on the below euthanasia page.  If this occurs, we hope to be in a position to list these dogs for up to five days on the euthanasia page but can't guarantee that will happen based on the variables / request that we receive from the public about running at large stray dogs.

Go to the below link to find out this is a nationwide crisis in the Animal Sheltering industry.

Overwhelmed Animal Shelters

Nationwide Crisis

The overcrowding at Animal Shelters is not just a local problem.  Communities all across the nation are experiencing the same situation.  Due to the lack of veterinarians, the poor economy, post pandemic puppies, the lack affordable housing, the lack of housing that permits pets and other variables this has caused a nationwide crisis.

Unfortunately, there is no quick fix in solving this situation.  Animal Shelters and Rescue Organizations are doing their best to educate animal owners, assist them when they need to surrender their pet and take in stray animals when the kennel population permits them.

Please take the time to go to the below links / news articles that show how other Animal Shelters in other areas of the country are being impacted just like Mendocino County.

Public Foster

When the dog population becomes high at the Animal Shelter we are placed in a position to not take in lost-stray dogs from the community or having to euthanize healthy dogs for kennel space.  We ask the finders of the lost-stray dogs to please assist Animal Care Services in possibly holding on & caring for the lost-stray dog for several days.  As kennel space becomes available staff will reach out to you to make arrangements for the lost-stray dog to come into the Animal Shelter.

Finders can go to the below link (Public Foster Form) and fill out the form.  Animal Care Services staff will contact you to ensure that the lost-stray dog is scanned for a microchip and that we are able to get a picture of the lost-stray dog for us to post on our Mendocino County Animal Shelter Facebook page.
