Hopkins Fire Updates

  • Property owners with fire debris or hazard trees from the 2021 Hopkins Fire are required to participate in an approved fire debris cleanup and removal process.  On December 7, 2022, the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors adopted Urgency Ordinance 4498 that requires the cleanup of fire debris and hazard trees on parcels impacted by the fire.  The methods of cleanup required by this ordinance include the State Program and the County’s Alternative (Private) Program.  The deadline to participate in the State Program was extended to December 17, 2021, as announced on December 13, 2021.

    Pursuant to Ordinance No. 4498, the Division of Environmental Health is establishing March 9, 2022, as the deadline by which property owners who are not participating in the State Program must submit an Alternative Program application to the Division of Environmental Health. The Division of Environmental Health can be reached for more information at 707-234-6625.

    Starting March 10, 2022, property owners that have not registered for the Alternative Program will be issued a Notice of Violation and Order to Abate, which will be sent by mail and posted on or in front of the property.  The County will still accept an Alternative Program application as stated in the Notice if submitted prior to the action date stated in the Notice.  If a Notice of Violation and Order to Abate is not acted upon by the property owner or person responsible for the property, the County will cleanup the impacted property, in a timely manner at the property owners expense.

  • Dec. 15, 2021: Hopkins Fire Phase II Debris Removal Operations have commenced. Tetra Tech is beginning assessments for all impacted properties with "Right of Entry" permits submitted.

  • Nov. 18, 2021: Mendocino County to Host Virtual Town Hall Meeting for Residents Impacted by the 2021 Hopkins Fire on Nov. 29, 2021. 11.18.21 - Press Release -Hopkins Fire Town Hall
  • Nov. 10, 2021: Property owners impacted by the 2021 Hopkins Fire who wish to participate in the Phase 2 consolidated debris removal program must complete and sign the Right-of-Entry Permit - Hopkins Fire before any work can begin. Debris removal operations are tentatively expected to begin in mid to late December.
  • Nov. 5, 2021: Phase 2 Debris Removal for the Hopkins Fire is being managed by CalRecycle. The bid package for debris removal operations is open and accepting bids until Dec. 3rd. 2021 FALL FIRES: STRUCTURAL DEBRIS REMOVAL & HAZARD TREE REMOVAL SERVICES
  • Oct. 27, 2021:U.S. Small Business Administration Approves Disaster Declaration for Residents Impacted by the 2021 Hopkins Fire.
  • Oct. 26, 2021: The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is preparing to begin phase 1 Household Hazardous Waste removal from Hopkins Fire impacted properties. Phase 1 has been completed as of 11/4/2021.
  • Oct. 22, 2021: Governor Newsom Issues Emergency Proclamation to Support Counties Recovering from Recent Fires, including the Hopkins Fire in Mendocino County. Proclamation of a State of Emergency
  • Watershed Protection: In recognition of a threat to public health and safety, The County of Mendocino has enacted measures to mitigate the potential for debris flows and contamination of the Russian River. The Board of Supervisors approved emergency funding for watershed protection on 10/19/2021. The County of Mendocino has completed the acquisition and installation of 2300 feet of straw wattles and silt socks in the area identified as most vulnerable to immediate watershed damage and contamination. All planned work has been completed as of 10/21/2021.
  • Rain Ready: After a wildfire, terrain and ground conditions within a burn scar can be dramatically altered. The loss of vegetation from wildfire leaves terrain charred, denuded and unable to absorb rainfall. These conditions can cause slope instability, potential debris flows and contamination of nearby waterways. FEMA -Flood After Fire Fact Sheet

Local non-profits North Coast Opportunities and United Disaster Relief of Northern California are providing direct assistance to Hopkins Fire survivors. United Disaster Relief of Northern California can be reached at 707-489-3970 or email UnitedDisasterRelief@gmail.com to schedule an appointment to pick up supplies.

Clean up and Rebuilding

Planning and Building Services has created a Hopkins Fire page with information on the urgency ordinance allowing temporary trailer occupancy, permit forms and a list of resources for fire clean up, debris removal and recovery.

Katrina Bartolomie, Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder would like property owners who have experienced damage to their home(s) and/or structures due to the Hopkins Fire earlier this month, to complete and submit the Hopkins Fire Property Damage Application
