FYI

During Covid we realized our dogs were getting the necessary rest & sleep of 14 to 16 hours a day and the benefit of that was we had an overall healthier dog kennel areas due to the decreased foot traffic that they were being exposed to.  The decision to keep the dog kennels closed to the public was also approved by our veterinarian after seeing the positive health benefits.

When the dog kennels were open to the public prior to Covid the dog kennel areas were not always occupied by staff during the business hours due to their job requiring them to be in different areas of the Animal Shelter throughout their workday.  Unfortunately, the visitors would put their fingers in the dog kennels when instructed not to, not be attentive in keeping their children in their immediate presence, we would find misc items in the dog kennels coming from the visitors as well as visitors stealing hose nozzles, food bowls etc.

If a citizen wishes to meet an adoptable dog in the kennels, we make arrangements-schedule an appointment time for them to meet the dog.  This practice of scheduling adoption appointments for dogs has also greatly assisted staff in scheduling their day activities.  Many other agencies & organizations such as Los Angeles County, Orange County, San Luis County Animals Shelters, City of Newport Beach and the Pasadena Humane Society all do appointment-based adoptions.

Thank you.
