Businesses operating in the unincorporated territory of Mendocino County, or contracting services directly with the County, must possess a valid and current Mendocino County Business License.  Review the Business License Ordinance for regulation, purpose, and authority.

To obtain a Mendocino County business license, the following items must be submitted to the Treasurer-Tax Collector:
  1. Completed Mendocino County Business License application.
  2. Remit Two (2) Checks - One made payable to the Mendocino County Tax Collector in the amount of $40 for the annual business license fee and one made payable to the Mendocino County Department of Planning & Building Services in the amount of $168 for a one-time application review fee. Please note: The review fee is only applicable if the fixed place of business is situated in the unincorporated area of Mendocino County; if not, the $168 fee is not required. If applicable, the Business License Building Review Questionnaire must also be completed if the business is situated in the unincorporated area of Mendocino County.

Please note: The Cannabis Facilities Business License and Regulation Ordinance is currently being reviewed by the Board of Supervisors; once this ordinance has been adopted by the Board, the following business types will transition from the standard business license to the adopted cannabis-related business license:

  1. Processing
  2. Manufacturing
  3. Testing
  4. Dispensing
  5. Retail Sales
  6. Distributing
  7. Microbusiness

No business license of any kind is required for cannabis cultivating or for performing operations related to a cannabis nursery.  Please see the Department of Agriculture for more Cannabis information regarding the permit process.
