Collection features over 14 million pages

Archives unbound logo. Computer with books on the screenThanks to a gift from the California State Library, Mendocino County Library borrowers will be gaining access to Gale’s Archives Unbound – a unique repository of some 14 million uploaded primary source items otherwise unavailable online.

Founded in 2009, the collection ranges from material covering U.S. foreign policy to colonialism; African American studies to Asian studies; British history to LGBT studies, and more. In 2019 alone the program plans to add 32 new subjects to its current collection of 230, and an additional 1.1 million pages of documents. Archives Unbound will be available through the Mendocino County Library Articles & Databases page.

Primary sources are of unique importance to college students, professors, authors, and historians. A primary source generally represents materials such as witness statements, maps, diaries, letters, etc. These documents serve as a foundation for many of the nonfiction books that you see on the shelves of your nearest library.
